Heavy rain likely over coastal TN

Chennai,Dec16 : The cyclonic system, which weakened into a low pressure area over Gulf of Mannar, has further weakened into a trough and heavy rain is expected to lash coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 36 hours starting 0830 hrs today, MeT officials said today.

"The system, which weakened and turned as low pressure area over Gulf of Mannar and adjoining north Sri Lanka, has further weakened into a trough. Under its influence,heavy rain is likely to occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next 36 hours starting today at 8.30 am", they said.

Fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea as strong winds with speed reaching 45-55 kmph is likely along off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during the period.

Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district recorded maximum rainfall of 15 cm while Chennai registered eight cm in the same period.

Several parts of the city and suburbs experienced heavy rain this morning and several office-goers struggled to reach their destination.

Though the state government declared holiday for schools today, some private educational institutions in the city functioned.

Fire service and rescue services personnel were working round the clock in the city and suburbs to remove uprooted trees.
